Racism is a refuge for the ignorant. It seeks to divide and to destroy. It is the enemy of freedom, and deserves to be met head-on and stamped out.

MANSFIELD - The memorial honoring the life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Mansfield's Central Park was vandalized. ..

The memorial honoring the life and legacy of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Mansfield's Central Park was vandalized overnight.

Mansfield police say vandals painted a swastika and the words "white power" on the monument and the face was painted white and its head yellow.

Marcia Webb, the President of the Mansfield Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, says the incident shows there is still racism in the world and an old mindset to divide the country instead of creating unity.

The $250,000 memorial was created by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and was dedicated in Central park in 2007.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact Lt. Allen Vandayburg at the Mansfield Police Department at 419-755-9755.

Webb says a $1,400 cash reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of a suspect or suspects involved in the vandalism. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
